Premenstrual Syndrome

Despite ongoing studies, the cause of Premenstrual Syndrome are not yet clear. Of course, some women may be more sensitive than others to changing hormone levels during the menstrual cycle. While some believe that stress does not seem to cause Premenstrual Syndrome, it could make it worse. Studies have revealed that Premenstrual Syndrome can affect menstruating women of any age and that Premenstrual Syndrome can affect menstruating women of any age and that Premenstrual Syndrome often includes both physical and emotional symptoms.

Doctors may diagnose PMS in many different ways. First, a thyroid test may be administered in order to determine if this gland is functioning appropriately. Many doctors may ask their patients keep a journal of the symptoms that they experience for a period of up to three months so that they are able to determine if the woman is truly experience premenstrual syndrome.

Research studies suggest that premenstrual syndrome tends to dissipate in women after the age of thirty five, however, it is estimated that approximately six percent of women who are between the ages of thirty five and forty four, are diagnosed with "PMDD" or "premenstrual dysphoric disorder" which is a more severe form of premenstrual syndrome.

Psychological (mental) symptoms are: feelings of aggression or anger, low mood, tension, loss of confidence, irritability, exhausted, anxiety, feeling emotional. The woman might have a change in her sleep pattern, sexual thoughts, and even in hunger. Relationships might turn strained due to such symptoms of premenstrual syndrome.

Many women suffer from premenstrual syndrome and depression. Depression that stems from premenstrual syndrome is believed to be one of the most common types of depression among women according to mental health specialists in the United States. In its most severe form, the depression that women may experience that is directly related to the menstrual cycle is referred to as a medical condition that is called premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

The symptoms caused by PMS can be of great variety varying in intensity and duration from one cycle to another. The most common mood related symptoms as mentioned above are tension, depression, anger, anxiety, irritability, mood swings, hypersensitivity, crying etc. The common physical signs of PMS are changes in appetite, craving for food, gaining of weight, fatigue, sleeping disorder, acne skin, tenderness of breasts, bloating, cramps, constipation, muscle pain, joint pain etc. In case of Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder the symptoms are so severe that it may lead to significant functional loss.

Medical experts do not believe that emotional factors such as stress cause the symptoms of PMS; however, they do believe that the symptoms of PMS can become more severe when a woman is experiencing emotional issues during the menstrual cycle. There are numerous symptoms associated with PMS with the most common ones being that of irritability, mood swings, oversensitivity, back pain, headache, and bloating.

In general, while the fate of 50% of the population of the planet must be the men probably do not believe that PMS is a serious situation, women around the world know better. Even women who suffer from milder symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, namely that the State makes your life very miserable for several days every month and that probably would not do anything to stop this scourge for months. Therefore, it is not surprising that the most common medical treatments prescribed for PMS, such as Prozac are so widely used. If 75% of women suffer from premenstrual syndrome and prescribed medication Prozac is more or less well-known SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake), the fact that these drugs are so widely used, probably, it seems inevitable.

A well balanced diet is essential for overall health and can also prevent premenstrual syndrome or reduce many of the symptoms associated with premenstrual syndrome. The recommended diet for premenstrual syndrome includes increasing the intake of fiber, whole grains, fruits and vegetables, while decreasing the intake of sodium (salt), refined sugars, red meat, caffeine, and alcohol. Nicotine is also known to cause increase the symptoms of PMS, therefore, it is recommended that smoking be reduced or eliminated during the premenstrual cycle.
